What to Include in a Chemo Care Package

What to Include in a Chemo Care Package

When someone you love is going through chemotherapy, knowing how best to support them isn’t always easy. You may want to help, but worry about saying the wrong thing or choosing something they cannot use.

A chemo care package is one simple way to remind them that they are loved and thought of. It doesn’t need to be elaborate. A few carefully chosen comforts, along with a personal note, can help them feel a little less alone.

If you’re putting together your own care package, here are some thoughtful ideas to consider.

1. Something Soft and Comforting

Treatment days can be long, and infusion centres are often cool. Soft, practical comforts can help make the time there—and the quiet days at home—a little cosier.

You might include:

  • A lightweight blanket or soft wrap
  • Warm, non-slip socks
  • A comfortable hat or headscarf
  • A small cushion or travel pillow

Choose items that feel gentle against sensitive skin and are easy to wash. It is usually best to avoid strongly scented products unless you know the recipient enjoys them, as smells that once felt comforting may become unpleasant during treatment.

2. Hydration and Personal Care Essentials

Chemotherapy can affect appetite, taste and skin in different ways. A reusable water bottle or insulated tumbler is a practical addition that they can bring to appointments or keep beside them at home.

Depending on what they find helpful, you could also consider:

  • Fragrance-free lip balm or hand cream
  • A soft toothbrush
  • Alcohol-free mouthwash
  • Ginger sweets, mints or hard candies
  • A water bottle to encourage hydration

Before adding food, drinks, supplements or skincare products, it’s a good idea to check with the recipient or someone close to them. Treatment plans and side effects vary, and their medical team may have given them specific advice.

3. Something to Pass the Time

Infusion appointments may last several hours, while recovery days can involve a great deal of waiting and resting. A quiet activity can offer a welcome change of focus without asking too much of their energy.

Some ideas include:

  • A colouring book or colouring cards with pencils
  • A puzzle, crossword or Sudoku book
  • A novel or magazine
  • An audiobook or music subscription
  • A journal and a comfortable pen

Try to choose something that suits the person rather than what you think they should be doing. Some days they may enjoy writing or colouring; on others, they may simply want to listen to music and rest.

4. A Few Words From You

The most meaningful part of a care package may be the part that costs the least: a note written in your own words.

You don’t need to find the perfect thing to say. A simple message such as “I’m thinking of you,” “There’s no need to reply,” or “I’m here whenever you need me” can feel more reassuring than an overly cheerful message.

You could also include a favourite memory, a photograph of the two of you, or a few short notes for them to open on different days. What matters is that the words sound like you and ask nothing of the person receiving them.

5. Make It Personal

A personal touch doesn’t need to be another gift. Often, a few words written especially for the recipient are enough to make a care package feel like it could only have come from you.

You might write a favourite memory in the greeting card, include a photograph of the two of you, or simply remind her of something you look forward to doing together. Keep it natural and true to your relationship - there is no need to find profound or perfect words.

It is the thought behind the package, rather than the number of things inside it, that makes it personal.

There Is No Perfect Care Package

The best chemo care package isn’t necessarily the biggest or most beautifully arranged. It is the one that says, in a way that feels true to you: I see what you’re going through. I’m thinking of you. You don’t have to face this alone.

A cosy pair of socks, a familiar photograph or a few honest words may seem like a small gesture. But sometimes, a small gesture is exactly what helps someone feel loved.
